Georgia Department of Corrections: What Families Need to Know (2026)
Georgia's guide draws from the Georgia Department of Corrections Locations directory, covering state prisons, county correctional institutions, transitional centers, and detention and treatment centers; county jails are excluded. For each facility, the guide lists its address, phone number, population served, and visiting days and hours where posted.
Statewide, visits fall on Saturdays, Sundays, and state holidays, in two-hour blocks scheduled through the GDC visitation portal, and the guide advises contacting the facility for its exact hours. Many facilities post general-population hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., but the details vary by place. Some facilities alternate days by last name, with Saturday for M through Z and Sunday for A through L, and others post separate hours for protective custody, segregation, or tier residents.
A few examples show why checking the individual facility page matters. At the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison, diagnostic offenders may be visited Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., only after 60 days, and only by immediate family. At Ware State Prison, tier visits run Wednesday and Friday, and visitors must call for an appointment at least one day ahead. Many facilities also list a P.O. Box mailing address alongside the street address, so use the mailing address shown for the facility you need.
