Hawaii Department of Corrections: What Families Need to Know (2026)

Hawaii is different from most states in one important way: its Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation runs both prisons and the island jails, called community correctional centers. The guide covers eight facilities, from Halawa Correctional Facility in Aiea to the community correctional centers on Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai, plus the Women's Community Correctional Center in Kailua, Hawaii's only women's prison. It also notes that about 1,400 Halawa men are housed at a contracted facility in Arizona.

One honest note runs through the guide: visiting days and times are not published by Hawaii's department for most facilities, so families should call the facility before traveling. The guide does list visitation phone lines where the department publishes them, including (808) 485-3550 for Halawa and (808) 266-9675 for the women's center. At Kulani, minors visiting need the department's Minor Consent Form and Waiver.

For loved ones held out of state, the Mainland Branch can be reached at (808) 837-8020. The guide also notes that inmate tablets allow video visit calls, and that Waiawa Correctional Facility lists a mailing address of P.O. Box 1839, Pearl City.

Cell Secretary is a white-glove concierge service for incarcerated people and their families. If it can be done legally and ethically on the outside, we can usually do it for you.
