Iowa Department of Corrections: What Families Need to Know (2026)
Iowa's guide covers the state's nine correctional institutions, under Director Dr. Beth Skinner, with each facility's address, phone number, and warden. The visiting system here is centralized and refreshingly straightforward: in-person and video visits are free for approved visitors, and both are scheduled through the Ameelio app.
Every adult visitor submits their own Visitor Application, and electronic applications are not accepted. You print, sign, and mail the application to Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility, Attention Central Records, 1200 E. Washington St., Mount Pleasant, IA 52641. Centralized visiting questions go to (319) 385-9511.
Hours vary by institution and are posted on each facility page. Anamosa offers in-person visits Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in two-hour blocks, with video visits Monday and Friday in 50-minute blocks. North Central offers in-person visits Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. At the Iowa State Penitentiary, the visiting week runs Friday through Monday, and people are currently limited to one visit per week. One caution: Mount Pleasant's Minimum Live Out suspended in-person visits beginning September 26, 2026, for a plumbing project, so confirm before you go.

Cell Secretary is a white-glove concierge service for incarcerated people and their families. If it can be done legally and ethically on the outside, we can usually do it for you.
