Maine Department of Corrections: What Families Need to Know (2026)

For families in Maine, the first step is getting approved. Only visitors on a resident's approved visiting list may visit, and at Maine State Prison in Warren, clearance can take up to six weeks, so it helps to apply early. Applications are available on each facility's page, and the guide lists the address and phone number for every facility.

Visiting looks different from place to place. At Bolduc Correctional Facility in Warren, visits run two hours on Saturdays, Sundays, and most major holidays, at 8:00–10:30 a.m., 12:30–2:30 p.m., and 3:00–5:00 p.m., requested by phone Monday through Thursday. Mountain View Correctional Facility in Charleston visits on Saturdays from 2:00–3:30 p.m. and 7:00–8:30 p.m., and Sundays from 2:00–3:30 p.m., with appointments required. Downeast Correctional Facility in Machiasport visits Saturdays from 1:00–2:30 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00–2:30 p.m. and 7:00–8:30 p.m., and walk-in visits are not permitted.

At Maine Correctional Center in Windham, including the Women's Center there, visits are by appointment only and scheduled online at least two business days in advance, so arrive 15 to 30 minutes early. One more practical note from the guide: first-class resident mail for several facilities routes through Cushing Road in Warren, so check the facility's Mail page before you write. Times can change, so please call the facility before you go.

Cell Secretary is a white-glove concierge service for incarcerated people and their families. If it can be done legally and ethically on the outside, we can usually do it for you.
