South Dakota Department of Corrections: What Families Need to Know (2026)

South Dakota asks families to plan ahead, and the guide makes the lead time clear: all visits must be pre-scheduled at least 72 hours in advance, and there is no single statewide schedule. Each facility's own page links its visitation schedule, so the right times depend on where your loved one is housed. Before visiting, every prospective visitor must complete a visitation application, with a background check required for visitors 18 or older, and approved visitors renew each year.

The guide lists nine facilities, with addresses and phone numbers from the department's Facilities page. The South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls, at 605-367-5051, shares its address, 1600 North Drive, P.O. Box 5911, Sioux Falls, SD 57117, with the Jameson Annex and the Sioux Falls Minimum Center. The guide also notes that people in Admissions and Orientation at the Jameson Annex, a period of about 20 days, may not have visits until they are assigned to housing.

Paper applications may be emailed to VisitList@state.sd.us or mailed to the facility, and video visitation must be scheduled in advance. The guide adds that anyone sending funds must also complete a visitation application. The department's central office in Pierre can be reached at (605) 773-3478.

The full guide, compiled in November 2026 from the South Dakota Department of Corrections, gathers every facility in one place for families.
