Texas Department of Corrections: What Families Need to Know (2026)
Texas is big, and its prison system matches that scale: the guide covers all 104 units linked from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Unit Directory, each with its address, phone number, gender, and senior warden. But the visiting rules are the same statewide, which makes the planning part much simpler than the size suggests.
Visits take place on Saturdays and Sundays between 8:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., with normally one two-hour visit per Monday-to-Sunday cycle. Visits are scheduled through the Online Visitation Portal, 1 to 7 days ahead. The guide points families to the department's visitation pages and each unit's page for facility-specific times, and it repeats the advice found in every guide: call the facility to confirm before you travel.
Because the guide lists every unit, it is easy to find the right one, from the Huntsville Unit at (936) 437-1555 to the Hilltop Unit in Gatesville at (254) 865-8901 and the Hospital Galveston unit, whose mailing address is P.O. Box 48, Substation #1, Galveston, TX 77555. The department's central office can be reached at (936) 295-6371, and its mailing address is P.O. Box 99, Huntsville, TX 77342-0099.
The full guide, compiled in November 2026 from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, puts all 104 units in one document for families.

Cell Secretary is a white-glove concierge service for incarcerated people and their families. If it can be done legally and ethically on the outside, we can usually do it for you.
