Utah Department of Corrections: What Families Need to Know (2026)

Utah's system is smaller than most, which can make it easier to get your bearings. The department operates two state prisons: the Utah State Correctional Facility in Salt Lake City, which opened in July 2022 and can be reached at 801-522-7000, and the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison, at 435-528-6000, which houses up to 1,800 male inmates. The guide also notes that about 25 percent of state inmates are held in county jails through the Inmate Placement Program, at 801-545-5558, and that six community correctional centers house people on probation or recently paroled.

Visiting has a clear weekly shape. In-person visits run Friday through Sunday, with two-hour sessions at the Utah State Correctional Facility and 90-minute sessions at the Central Utah Correctional Facility, while video visits run Monday through Thursday. Exact unit times appear on the monthly visiting calendars posted on the department's visitation page. Visitors must be approved and must make an appointment before visiting, responses come by email, all visitors pass through a body scanner, and visitors should arrive 30 minutes early for in-person visits. Application decisions are currently taking about two months.

Mail for the Central Utah Correctional Facility goes to P.O. Box 550, and the department's central office in Draper can be reached at (801) 545-5500. The full guide, compiled in November 2026 from the Utah Department of Corrections, gathers both prisons for families.

Cell Secretary is a white-glove concierge service for incarcerated people and their families. If it can be done legally and ethically on the outside, we can usually do it for you.
